The SmetaNOVY Hall in Litomysl passed its first big test – perfectly

Over the past few days, we’ve completed – together with our partner EXCON – the installation of a brand-new roofing structure over the 2nd courtyard of Litomyšl Castle for the Smetana’s Litomyšl Music Festival. The result: a stunning open-air concert hall for up to 1300 spectators. The unique structure was designed by renowned Czech architect Josef Pleskot.
What makes this project so exceptional?
🌌 Retractable roof
On warm summer nights, it opens to the sky. When the weather turns, it silently covers the seating area in just a few minutes. This feature was already put to the test during the dress rehearsal – rain included. The structure incorporates the lifting and sliding drive systems for the roof, stage machinery and lighting equipment.
🏛️ UNESCO heritage compliance
Designed with full respect for the historic site and under the strict requirements of the National Heritage Institute, the self-supporting steel construction does not touch the castle walls. Its height ensures that views of the restored sgraffito decorations, renaissance sundial and historic façades remain completely unobstructed.
🎭 Acoustic and scenic excellence
The hall delivers outstanding sound distribution and visibility from every seat. With a 23 × 15 m stage and built-in orchestra pit, it is fully equipped to host everything from symphonic concerts and opera to drama.
⏱️ Fast-paced precision in a historic setting
The entire project – from first sketches to full implementation – took less than a year. All this within a highly sensitive and closely observed heritage site. No corners were cut, and every deadline was met.
🔄 Fully demountable and mobile
The structure can be erected or dismantled in approx. 2 weeks, allowing the courtyard to return to its original state after the festival ends.
Everything is now ready for the opening of the 67th edition of Smetana’s Litomysl, taking place this Saturday, 14 June.
We are grateful to everyone who placed their trust in us.
To the festival, we wish captivated audiences. May the SmetaNOVÝ Hall resonate far beyond the borders of the Czech Republic.
